Thousands of dollars will be awarded!

Entry Fees: We are listening to our artists and art councils. We have updated the entry fee process for 2011 to make it more appealing and easier to enter and pay online. This too should help to prevent confusion and entry errors.

Changing from: Paying $25 for up to three pieces of artwork entered (Amateurs)

To: Paying a processing fee of $10 plus $5 for each (up to three) artwork entered (Amateurs).

Changing from: Paying $30 for up to three pieces of artwork entered (Professionals).

To: Paying a processing fee of $10 plus $10 for each (up to three) artwork entered (Professionals).

Film Division: $10 per entry (film shorts - two categories: general or agricultural). THE FILM DIVISION IS NOW OPEN TO ANY RESIDENT OF THE US.

New Competition in 2011:

Come "Roll in Hay" with us - artist can create an on-site sculpture out of hay/straw. And by the way, we'll provide the hay/straw. For inspiration, click here http://www.zuzafun.com/great-hay-art. The creation and exhibit location will be directly outside the Fine Arts Center east lawn area. The fee to enter will be $10 and there's some big bucks waiting for the winners.

Sarah Fairchild: 2010 People's Choice Award Winner!

Congratulations to Sarah Fairchild's "Sweet Corn and Flame Stitch" for winning this years People's Choice Award!

Here's an artist Statement from her website:

Growing up in a small town in Northwest Ohio, I often helped my mother and grandmother pull weeds and plant seeds. This early exposure to gardening and nature has inspired and informed my work. I am moved by the ordinary forms and objects that surround us - weeds and plants that I observe everyday on the highways and roadsides throughout Ohio, as well as the fence forms and flowers I see on my morning walks in the alleys throughout my neighborhood.

Working with fluorescent paint on paper is a relatively new media for me as an artist. In the past, working with oil paint on canvas, my flower forms and pattern have adorned still lives and interior spaces. My current work is committed, simplified and modern. I have taken small sections from my previous works and explored the essence of one idea, one moment. The paintings of flowers become modern versions of the classic botanical print.

Fluorescent color is typically associated with the garish, sterile nature of neon signs, rather than the elegance and beauty of fine art. I am intrigued with the process of transforming something ordinary or mundane into something extraordinary. My intent is to give life, vibrancy and importance to these common forms. I am drawn to the visual impact and scintillation that is created through the use of fluorescent color. While this effect may be difficult to glean from a photographic image, when viewed in person, the impact is undeniable.

The use of the silhouette is a common theme throughout my work. It allows me to capture the essence of the forms; it is simple and understood collectively.
I purposely paint the silhouette in darker colors, never black, with the intent to give an updated perspective from the traditional paper cut outs of the early 1800's. At first, the paintings have a flat graphic quality, however quickly transcend into much greater dimension. The surface has a tactile feel that comes alive thru the use of punched holes, grommets and the juxtaposition of thin layers of color next to the liberally painted surface of the silhouetted forms.

Oh, The Things You'll Do and See at the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition!

I will never forget the feeling. That "It's fair day!" feeling. When I was younger, I would sit anxiously in the family van with wide eyes and a watering mouth, bouncing with anticipation for the rides, the horses, the corndogs and cotton candy; all the while wondering why it was taking so long to park the car!

I still get that same feeling today. However, today I am anticipating something even better than candy and corndogs. Today I look forward to what The Ohio State Fair's best kept secret has to offer. I look forward to the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition! Rain or shine, (and we all know, here in Columbus, there has been plenty of both) whether its a comfortable 80 or a blazing 100 degrees outside, on Wednesday morning when its seems you have the entire fair to explore all for yourself, or Saturday afternoon when it seems everyone in Ohio has had the same idea all at once; you can count on the The Cox Fine Arts Center to be a haven from the elements of the fair. And this year's exhibition is better than ever.

Of course, we have welcomed back the fine arts exhibition "regulars" such as the professional and amateur art exhibits, Kid's Tour -N- More, featuring crossword puzzle activities and the ever popular Recycling Mural,and Mural demonstration by Andrew Neyer,(which will both be displayed in window space outside our building next year) The Wexner Center for the Arts Short Film/ Video Showcase, and Desdemona's Body Art, who presented a body painting demonstration. We have also had visits from exhibition entertainment favorites such as Mixed Bag with the Recreational Folk Dancers of Columbus, and the musical styling of Blue Level.

New this year were the Carole E. Kerber- Status Dude and Status Dudette, Loosely Strung, the music of Brian Griffin, John Lafollette, ICC Outreach performances, The Capitol Barbershop Quartet, Hand Quilting by Sarah Brown and El Ritmo Flamenco Dance Ensemble. We were also very excited to introduce the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition's very first Short Film Division and Fashion Show, featuring the elegant designs of Legair Brand, Ltd. We also invited Olinda Jansupka as part of our Community Street Art Program. Finally, we were pleased to announce the addition of our Outdoor Performance Space near the East entrance of the Cox Fine Arts Center.

Kid's Tour -N- More Recycling Mural: Interview with Chaz O'Neil

This year the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, Kid's Tour -N- More is featuring an interactive Recycling Mural. Fair-goers are invited to glue various, recycled caps and lids to a mural in the shape of the universal recycling symbol.

We interviewed Assistant Director of the exhibition Chaz O'Neil for more on the mural:

OSFFAE: Hey, Chaz! How's it goin'?
Chaz: I'm good, thanks.
OSSFAE: That's great. So, could you tell us a little about yourself?
Chaz: Yeah. My name's Chaz O'Neil. I'm a graduate of Otterbein College. Art Major. I've been working with the fair for five years. I'm assistant director of the show this year.
OSFFAE: That is awesome, Chaz!
Chaz: {Chuckles} Thanks.
OSFFAE: Sure. So... Could you tell us about this HUGE mural?
Chaz: Yeah.
OSFFAE: Would you care to share how you came up with the idea for this mural?
Chaz: Well, it was kind of a collaborative effort.
OSFFAE: Don't be modest, Chaz. I heard it was totally your idea. Haha! Just kidding.
Chaz: Haha! No, I suggested the design but, the fine arts staff and I kind of collectively came up with the whole scheme of it.
OSFFAE: Okay. What was the inspiration for the mural? It seems like the theme we've adopted has something to do with recycling...? I'm assuming... based on the rather large recycling symbol.
Chaz: Well, our goal is to promote recycling awareness. We're using recycled materials and we've collected a few thousand bottle caps.It's an interactive piece, and we're allowing fair-goers to contribute by helping to glue the caps to the mural. It's kind of like a free-for-all as you can see.
OSFFAE: Yeah, it's pretty wild, but it looks so cool thus far.
Chaz: Yeah, and, it especially gives the kids an opportunity to get involved and to be creative, and also to learn a lot. The mural is just our way of giving back to the community on behalf of the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition.
OSFFAE: Well, I'm excited to see how it turns out.
Chaz: Me too.

Community Street Art Project

The Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition would like to thank the Greater Columbus Arts Council on behalf of the Community Street Art Project. This program has been brought to you, and made possible by the Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Grant funded by Franklin County Board of Commission.

The Community Street Art Project provides an opportunity for local artists to collaborate with community summer camps/programs in the Columbus area, teaching children basic design concepts and techniques, promoting the Ohio State Fair in doing so.The final street painting project will be presented July 30th to August 1st and again August 6th to August 8th.

Shining a Light on Che' Marie

It was our great pleasure to present songstress, Che'Marie, as the entertainment for our Opening Ceremony last night. However, she did much more than entertain. Most were captivated by her melodious nature, and charmed to stay for a listen. Her soulful style and poetic voice are undeniable, and it was an honor to serve as a unique platform for a truly revolutionary artist.

Che'Marie Guy is a native of Chicago, Illinois, but has been a Columbus resident for over ten years. ARTIST'S...Due to an emergency, our Professional Juror James "blusterone" Alicea, was unable to come to town for the Jury process.Tim Rietenbach, graciously stepped up to the plate! Annegreth and Tim put together the very best of all the great entries!!!

Tim Rietenbach, lives in the Short North neighborhood of Columbus with his wife Tamie and three sons Eric, Sam and Cole. Tim is an active artist and Professor currently working at Columbus College of Art and Design. During his time at CCAD he has also served as the Visiting Artist Coordinator, Chair of Foundation Studies, and is currently the Director of student exhibitions. He spent more than a decade living, working and exhibiting in New York City. His large-scale installation work has earned him several Individual Artist Grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, including the Dresden Residency and funding to install “Gigantic” (one hundred foot human skeleton) at COSI.

The Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition welcomes the Visual Art Jurors for 2010! Professional jurors, Tim Rietenbach and Annegreth Nill are both pioneers in the industry, both from very diverse, artistic backgrounds, and Amateur Juror Melissa Vogley Woods, who is no stranger to this particular exhibition. Jurors for the Short Film division are to be announced soon!

PROFESSIONAL JURORS

ARTIST'S...Due to an emergency, our Professional Juror James "blusterone" Alicea, was unable to come to town for the Jury process. Tim Rietenbach, graciously accepted to jury in his place.

Tim Rietenbach, lives in the Short North neighborhood of Columbus with his wife Tamie and three sons Eric, Sam and Cole. Tim is an active artist and Professor currently working at Columbus College of Art and Design. During his time at CCAD he has also served as the Visiting Artist Coordinator, Chair of Foundation Studies, and is currently the Director of student exhibitions. He spent more than a decade living, working and exhibiting in New York City. His large-scale installation work has earned him several Individual Artist Grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, including the Dresden Residency and funding to install “Gigantic” (one hundred foot human skeleton) at COSI.

Annegreth Nill -
Annegreth T. Nill is an independent curator of contemporary art living and working in Columbus, Ohio. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Nill was chief curator at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale where she organized, among other exhibitions, Pablo Picasso Ceramics / Carlos Luna Paintings, Matthew Schreiber: Platonic Solids and Survivors & Liberators: Portraits by Wilma Bulkin Siegel. Nill was curator of 20th-century and contemporary art at the Columbus Museum of Art from 1995 to 2005. As that museum’s first curator of contemporary art, she curated numerous one-person and group exhibitions including Opening Night: A Video Installation by John Henry Blatter and Twenty Ways to Get an Apple Listening to the Music of Mozart: An Installation by Ilyia and Emilia Kabakov (both installations subsequently joined the permanent collection), and Reordering Reality: Collecting Contemporary Art and Extraordinary Realities: The Lois Plehn Collection. She was also co-curator of the traveling exhibitions Symphonic Poem: The Art of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson and Illusions of Eden: Visions of the American Heartland. Prior to leaving for Florida, Nill curated Made in Ohio / Diverse Sources, an exhibition which showcased work by members of the Ohio Art League and was hosted by the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery.

Melissa Vogley Woods -

Melissa Vogley Woods originates from Columbus, Ohio and received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute. Recently she has attended the Greater Columbus Arts Council International Artist Residency, and has received an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and several Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Grants for her community based work.

Recent International Exhibitions include: “open house” Mastul eV Kunstverein, Berlin, Germany; “Nachbarschaft Verlassen- Neighborhood Gone” Gallery Raskolnikow Dresden, Germany and upcoming “Unter Oberflächen” Delikatessenhaus, Leipzig Germany. Recent national exhibitions include: “Craftism ”, University of Wisconsin; “Devotion to Thread ”, Woodland Pattern Book Gallery, Milwaukee; “Fiberarts International Exhibition” Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and “National Small Art Quilt Exhibition” New York. Melissa Vogley Woods has recently co-directed the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition, co-founded C.A.M.P. Community Arts and Mural Project. Vogley Woods has had the honor of being an entry and onsite juror for the Columbus Arts Festival, and juried for Montgomery County Visual and Media Fellowship Program. This year she will curate exhibitions at Hopkins Hall Gallery and Corridor and Ohio Dominican University, Whehrle Gallery as well as Juror the Upper Arlington Labor Day Art Festival.

The Ohio State Fair means livestock exhibits, concerts, corn on the cob, the butter cow or the Ferris wheel.

The Fine Arts Exhibition is a microcosm of the experience.

Through myriad works by professionals and amateurs, fairgoers savor the diverse creativity of Ohio artists. The densely packed show this year in the Cox Fine Arts Center features more than 200 works.

Wading through hundreds of entries to narrow their selections to those of exceptional quality were the jurors: Iduna Bohning, an art administrator from Dresden, Germany; Rosemarie Fiore, a nationally recognized artist; and Richard Aschenbrand, a professor, curator and graphic designer at the Columbus College of Art & Design.

No thematic vision unites the exhibit. Instead, viewers explore pieces of exquisite beauty and technique along with works that present elaborate ideas and messages.

Using found materials, Greg Stange produces quirky sculptural vessels. In Baby Boomer, a globe is suspended above a metal bowl. On top of the globe is a bronzed baby shoe. Bullets attached to wire stems surround the item like a bouquet of flowers. Referring to the ornate metal-smithed vessels produced for the Roman Catholic Church and medieval kings, the piece is a meditation on power.

Josh Foy unites material and meaning in three politically charged pieces. In Made in China Too, he explores the perils of consumerism by producing a U.S. flag from cast and Chinese plastic toys.

A take on Shepard Fairey's "Obama Hope" poster, Foy's New Look, Same Great Product uses toy guns, house shapes, money and circuit boards to address the problem of "politics as usual."

Much like a scientific specimen case, Lindsey Nodo's assemblage Collective of Transformations features butterfly wings, beetles, leaves and seeds preserved in resin. Embedded within the piece, a functioning compass suggests the effort to understand, chart or identify the unknowable.

Paul Richmond explores the issue of gay marriage in Noah's Gay Wedding Cruise.

A dollhouse atop a female mannequin's legs, Womanhouse by Jessica Pardue questions sexual roles and identity.

Strong two-dimensional works include the comical Henry Hates Roy by Juliet Montague; the atmospheric Being Ever Seeing by Robert Mullenix; the biomorphic The Well by Dana Oldfather; the poetic Black Jacket by Brent Payne; the compelling River Mouth by Laura Sanders; and the ornate 5 Card Stud by Casey Vogt.

Great three-dimensional or craft pieces to look for include Jason Border's carved ceramic vessel Gator, Karen Gonzales' decorative quilt Peacock, Liz Hunt's furniture piece Walking Spindle Stand, Kristi Kloss' necklace Peruvian Gems, Janis Mars-Wunderlich's grotesque figurine Queen Mother and Katie Schutte's silver-andenamel Pineapple Vessel.

With its diverse array of truly accomplished work, the show is a must for fair visitors.

For all but a few of the Ohio State Fair's 156 years, artists have been showing their work alongside animal breeders and 4-H members. And last year, 34,000 people took time from the enjoyment of fried food on sticks to explore this part of the fair experience, held since 1909 at the Cox Fine Arts Center.
This year, however, visitors to the State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition can expect a little more hubbub. The new events planned in connection with the show are a visible sign of the behind-the-scenes work being done by some fresh blood, Melissa Vogley Woods and Pam O'Loughlin, co-directors of fine arts at the fair who started their second go-round at the Cox Center this week.
O'Loughlin and Woods both have backgrounds in art - the former as a designer and art therapist, the latter as a widely shown mixed-media artist who recently launched a blog about artists' individual workspaces.
"Our personalities are really different and where our talents lie are different, which makes it really nice," O'Loughlin said.
Together they've digitized the process by which artists submit work and gotten more aggressive about petitioning arts councils around the state to encourage artists to apply. According to O'Loughlin, "That's one of our biggest goals, to get artists from all over Ohio, not just [the largest] counties."
The annual children's tour has been livened up with new interactive elements such as an image-hunt video in which the co-directors play dress-up, and a collaborative quilting bee inspired by Woods' contribution to last year's Art al Fresco.
And in addition to the traditional schedule of attractions in the building's auditorium, this year the arts activities will spread to the asphalt around the Cox Center. The Columbus Crafty Cotillion will set up operations nearby on Aug. 8 (see story on next page), and Aug. 6-8, artist Adam Brouillette will paint a new, permanent mural on the building's exterior.
"We really want to expand the outside activities, which is kind of hard," explained Woods. "We needed people [like Columbus Crafty Cotillion] who could come and do their show - here's the space, we'll work with you on whatever - so that's how it worked."
As for Brouillette's contribution, "This is a new program too. All these little boarded-up windows you see outside, each of those is going to have a mural, painted each year."
With a chuckle, Woods added, "The fair's getting 'hip.'"
Truth is, inside the Cox Center, it's been hip for a while. The jurors brought in by Woods, O'Loughlin and other directors over the years have reliably selected work that can be challenging as well as creative.
The nearly 300 selections this year range from traditional Americana to an anti-consumerist statement in which an American flag is constructed of China-made toys. Along with classic portraiture, there's Paul Richmond's "Noah's Gay Wedding Cruise," in which the pairs include Ellen and Portia, Bert and Ernie.
"I like seeing people's different reactions," O'Loughlin said.
"The comments," said Woods. "Last year we had a horse that was made out of fake flowers, and this grandma comes by with her husband and they're looking at it, and she says, 'How would you dust that?' Stuff like that is so funny."
But despite sometimes confused reactions and the state fair being better known for airbrush than fine art, the co-directors stressed that the fine arts show, the best-attended art show in the state, is a great opportunity for Ohio artists.
"The only other way you can get an Ohio Arts Council award is to get an Individual Arts Excellence award," Woods explained. "Or you can enter this show, and they're giving out 11 awards this year. It's an Ohio Arts Council award; it's the same on your resume. I don't think it clicks in people's minds."

Ohio Art League, in association with the OSU Urban Arts Space, presents a workshop on creating digital images of artwork to use for submissions to exhibitions. Topics covered in the workshop will include:

transferring slide images to digital images
selecting a digital camera
shooting digital images
transferring digital images from camera to computer
editing digital images
and formatting images for submissions, print, and web
In order to cover the wide variety of subjects, the workshop will be a demonstration type presentation, not a hands-on. Members of the OAL working as professionals in this field will be on hand to answer questions you may have about how to best prepare you digital images.

Richard Aschenbrand is a professor and dean of Visual Communications at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He received his BFA and MS, at Pratt Institute.
Aschenbrand is a freelance graphic and package designer serving local, national, and international, clients. He has also had extensive experience as an exhibition curator, juror, and designer. He was, for many years, the fines arts director for the Ohio Expositions Commission and was gallery director for CCAD.
He has often served on jury panels both locally and beyond and published articles in American Crafts, Metropolis, the Columbus Dispatch, and has written numerous forwards and commentaries to exhibition catalogs. He regularly presents his research and creative work at regional and national conferences.
He continues his work as a painter and often exhibits his work.
Aschenbrand’s love for art and design is always present and he enjoys sharing it with everyone.

Iduna Böhning

Iduna has been working in the fields of Fine Arts since 1994. She has gathered a wide range and comprehensive amount of experiences in the fields of Arts and Arts Management from being the head of several art projects in the general public, developing and realizing of a functioning model of the Kunsthaus Raskolnikow and the construction and running of a gallery. Her areas of responsibilities expanded to an international level with the takeover of the scholarship program run between the state of Saxony, the GCAC Columbus Ohio and the supporters of the scholarship program of Dresden.
Explicit exhibitions from past scholarship holders and the development of a catalogue has helped integrate the exchange program as being part strong part of the range of duties covered by the gallery.
The job of the gallery, under management of Iduna Böhning, is promoted by the city of Dresden and the State ministry of Sciences and Culture.

Visitors to the Ohio State Fair might want to take a break from elephant ears and kettle corn for a special treat: the Fine Arts Exhibition. With more than 300 pieces in virtually every medium, the exhibit in the Cox Fine Arts Center offers something for everyone (without calories).

The roster of jurors alone is impressive: Works in the professional division were selected by New York artist Michael Ferris Jr. and Philadelphia media artist Tim Portlock. Ceramist, author and editor Anderson Turner of Kent State University chose works in the amateur division.

All three sought pieces with a clear vision. Some works are conceptual, others straightforward and traditional. Painting and photography dominate, but sculpture and craft-based works are equally well-represented, contributing to an exhibit with surprises around every corner.

Among the best: Josh Foy's trio of ceramic sculptures (Out of Sight, Out of Mind; Catch; and 43078). The large, cylindrical columns resemble scientific core samples examining the debris of human life. Trash, bricks and machine parts are presented as sedimentary-rock layers. At the top of each column, grass grows. The sculptures address the environmental consequences of consumption and how nature tries to heal itself.

Confronting issues of materiality and value, Jaime Bennati's untitled relief sculpture transforms the ordinary into something unexpected and magical. From the front, the piece resembles a large formation of coral. Closer examination reveals that it is constructed of newspaper and glue.

Ardine Nelson's series of three untitled photographs focuses attention on the walls and ceilings of abandoned buildings.

Christopher Werkman's hyper-real still life Artifact With Internally Combustive Capability is a meditation on the reliance on fossil fuels.

Derrick Velasquez's A More Perfect Union looks like a blank wooden plank sealed with clear varnish. As viewers move around the piece, the words "a more perfect union" appear and disappear across the surface. Deceptively simple, the work emphasizes the fragility of democratic ideas.

A critique of the war in Iraq, Joan Tallan's woodcut Mr. Bush's War VI mixes images of soldiers and weapons with the specter of death.

Standout paintings include Robert Tavani's expressionistic still life Heat, Kirill Novikov's impressionistic landscape Winter, Frederick Foctman's intimate interior Black Shirt, Rick Akers' industrial landscape Train Yard, Jeffrey Knick's abstraction A Tangled Mess and Monica Achberger's colorful landscape Road Less Traveled.

The craft-based works are strong as well. Featuring a series of four water towers with different colors and textural patterns, Andrea Stern's quilt Marilyn pays tongue-in-cheek homage to Andy Warhol.

Cynthia Vardhan's porcelain vessels Pink and Red Vase and Blue Fan Bowl are studies in simple beauty and decorative harmony. Exploring natural structures and podlike forms, Carol Snyder's Ravine and Fall combine porcelain with woven patches of grass fiber.
